Dbfetch is an acronym for "database fetch". Dbfetch provides an easy way to retrieve entries from various databases at the EBI in a consistent manner. It can be used from any browser as well as well as within a web-aware scripting tool that uses wget, lynx or similar. The dbfetch service is a partial implementation of the OBDA (http://obda.open-bio.org/) biofetch specification.

Logol is a language used to describe some patterns in a DNA/RNA/Protein sequence. It focuses on biological meaning patterns to help biologists and bio-informaticians formulate some patterns and create an appropriate model. LogolMatch will then scan a sequence with this model to find the expected patterns. Oneline documentation shows how to use this language to define patterns, and how to use LogolDesigner to create some grammar models graphically.

The system is developed on top of the Apache Lucene project framework, which is an Open-source, high-performance, full-featured text search engine library written entirely in Java. It uses this technology to index EBI databases in various formats (e.g. flatfiles, XML dumps, OBO format, etc.) and provides very fast access to the EBI's data resources. The system allows the user to search globally across all EBI databases or individually in selected resources by using an Advance search. Additional features of the system also uses software developed by the Carrot2 Project.

WSDbfetch allows you to retrieve entries from various up-to-date biological databases using entry identifiers or accession numbers. This is equivalent to the CGI based dbfetch service. Like the CGI service a request can return a maximum of 200 entries.
